On October 28, 2017, thousands of New Yorkers marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to mark five years since Hurricane Sandy struck the city.
The demonstration was organized to demand for better protections against the impacts of climate change and for a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Leading the march were young people of color from many of New York’s hardest hit communities, followed by Sandy survivors and first responders.
In 2012, Sandy caused $75 billion worth of damage, costing the lives of 233 people in eight countries along its path. March organizers fear the city is unprepared to properly protect New Yorkers against the next superstorm.
