Upset over the verdict that found NYPD Officer Wayne Issacs not guilt of murder and manslaughter for shooting and killing Delrawn Small, demonstrators rallied at Union Square in New York City on November 9th, 2017, to voice their rejection of a criminal justice system they believe is consistently allowing police officers like Issacs to go unpunished for unnecessarily ending the lives of unarmed black and brown people.
Small was unarmed when he approached Issacs’ vehicle after a traffic dispute on July 4th, 2016, when the off-duty officer opened fire. Small’s girlfriend, their 4-month-old son, and her 14-year-old daughter watched from their car. Issacs left Small on the side of the road after he was shot, allowing the 37-year-old father to bleed to death on the ground, offering no emergency aid and failing to alert 911 that he had shot someone.
At the demonstration were friends and family of Small and other victims of police violence, including Small’s brother and sister whom he helped raise. Victor Dempsey and Victoria Davis, who are photographer here comforting each other, each spoke about the man who was their brother and what he meant to their family.
